Our roots
History
The legacy
More than a century later, Enrique Mateo takes up that bond — one that did not carry on generation after generation, but which he recovered years later, inspired by his great-grandfather — and brings it to a very specific place: the highest land of the Segovian Ribera del Duero, at the southern edge of the Denomination of Origin.
There, between 950 and 1,025 metres above sea level, between the Sistema Central and the Duero valley, a project takes shape that looks ahead without losing sight of where it comes from. An austere landscape of vineyards, junipers and springs, and a demanding climate, form the setting where that family story begun in 1898 finds a new expression today.

The name
The name Mateo Nieves sums up that bond between past and present: Mateo, for Enrique; Nieves, in tribute to Manuel Nieves and to those who started the journey. A way of acknowledging our origin while we write our own chapter in the family's wine story.
Enrique Mateo began his career in the sector in 2002 in Germany's Rhine Valley, returning ten years later to his native Alicante to make wine in that D.O., while combining it with his work as an importer for leading houses from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Piedmont, Rheingau and beyond, alongside a specialised nationwide distribution business for the restaurant and gourmet channels. The Bodegas Enrique Mateo project is part of the Mateo Wines group, and it is in the exceptional land of Ribera del Duero that it has found its new interpretation and way of understanding wine.
The story of the vineyard is the story of a family. Every bottle holds the legacy of the man who came before us.
Manuel Nieves
